HJ Synchro Drive

Background

The past years more engine makers have started the production of engines without mechanical drive.
Hans Jensen Lubricators A/S has developed HJ Synchro Drive, among others, in order to meet this development. The HJ Synchro Drive system facilitates cylinder lubrication with mechanical lubricators without the use of a mechanical connection to the engine’s drive.

Functionality

The essence of the HJ Synchro Drive system is an electronic control unit that receives signals on the speed and direction of the engine’s flywheel. These signals are transmitted to an electric motor driving the mechanical lubricators synchronously with the engine.

Flexibility

HJ Synchro Drive puts no restrictions in relation to the customer’s specification of the lubricators. Operational reliability and the customer specific solution comes with HJ Mechanical Lubricators.

Purpose

HJ Synchro Drive facilitates cylinder lubrication synchronously (timed cylinder lubrication) with the engine without the mechanical connection to the engine’s drive. This means, that it is now also possible to mount the revolutionary HJ SIP system and obtain the advantages connected to this.

System description

The essence of the HJ Synchro Drive system is an electronic control unit that receives signals from sensors at the engine’s flywheel. The signals are through a frequency converter converted into a signal, which is transmitted to an electric motor driving the mechanical lubricators synchronously with the engine. The control cabinet is connected to a control box through which the operation may be monitored, and where possible alarms are shown. In order to increase the operational reliability of the system, a back-up system with separate circuits, power supplies and sensors has been made. At signal errors or similar the back-up system is automatically switched on. The control box can be implemented in the control panel of the vessel.

Installation

The mechanical part of Synchro Drive can be delivered as one or few assembled modules from our factory. Each module consists of a frame in which gear, engine and lubricators are installed. This reduces the installation time onboard.

Control panel

If the control panel indicates an error, please press the button ”Reset” and wait a moment. If the error re-emerges, please consult the manual for HJ Synchro Drive. In the manual you will find a description of what the different error signals mean and which action should be made in order to rectify the error.

Rust protection

HJ Synchro Drive and other equipment are delivered with rust protection. The rust protection can be removed with e.g. petroleum or turpentine Please make sure to perform a new rust protection if the rust protection is removed. In connection with cleaning of the survey block/ball control glass after use of the rust protection, please see the list at the bottom of this page. The list describes which chemicals may damage the survey block/ball control glass.

Leakage

Make sure the gaskets of the survey block/ball control glass, pipes and joints between the lubricator and the lube valves are maintained tight. Furthermore, please make sure that the gaskets inside the lubricator are tight.

Additionally

The screws on HJ Synchro Drive are retightened within the first three months or after 2000 running hours. Filters are exchanged or cleaned at suitable intervals. The lubricator is disassembled once a year or at suitable intervals with the purpose of cleaning the box for dirt, cleaning of the survey block/ball control glass and the lube valves and aerating the pipes with air. At the subsequent assembling of the lubricator, new gaskets and seals are installed. The survey block/ball control glass is mounted with the largest inner diameter upwards. Fill the lubricator with new lube oil and bleed as described in section 3.1 in the manual for HJ Synchro Drive.

  • Is it possible to retrofit HJ Synchro Drive?
    • Yes, HJ Synchro Drive can be retrofitted in most cases.

  • How is HJ Synchro Drive operated?
    • During normal operation the mechanical lubricators on HJ Synchro Drive are operated like traditional mechanical lubricators.

      With HJ Synchro Drive comes a control box, on which the operation may be monitored and where possible alarms are shown.

      If requested, the control box may be implemented in the engine’s control panel onboard the vessel.

  • How do you synchronise HJ Synchro Drive with the engine?
    • The control box of HJ Synchro Drive receives signals on the engine’s speed by means of a series of sensors which are installed at the engine’s flywheel.

      Based on this, a frequency converter in the control box calculates the RPM of the engine to the signal needed to drive the mechanical lubricators synchronously with the vessel’s engine.

  • What has been done to obtain a high operational reliability of the electronic system?
    • Redundancy is built into the system in order to increase the operational reliability. Redundancy is made with a complete back-up system with separate circuit, power supplies and sensors.

      At signal errors or similar in the primary circuit, the back-up system is automatically switched on.
